Welcome to the Watton Radio Model Club, if you are an existing member we hope that this site provides you with all the information you need to stay abreast of current events. However, if you are new to the great sport/hobby of remote control airplanes, helicopters or quadcopters we hope you find all the information you need to get off to a great start. Watton Radio Model Club was formed in 1973 by a small group of modellers who used the airfield at Watton whilst the RAF air station was still operational. The club title reflects the various modelling interests at the time, but in recent years the activity has become concentrated on R/C aircraft. The club is affiliated with the British Model Flying Association which is a non-profit organization made up of flying clubs and individuals who agree to pool resources for the benefit of all. WRMC activities are organized through a committee that is elected annually at the AGM. The airfield we use is at Carbrooke Fen within 2 miles of the original Watton military site. ______________________________________________________________________ The followin letter was sent by Norman Philips who was instrumental in forming the Watton Radio Model Club, the letter is in response to the realisation that this year 2023, is the 50th year since the flying club was formed. Before entering the realms of flyng R/C aircraft I had started Watton Radio Model Club when I obtained permission to run my model boat on Loch Neaton by kind courtesy of the Loch Neaton committee chairman and vice chair namely Mr Bob Nunn and Dick Durrant. Both of which later became flying members. This branch of the club with many active members, continued for some years, hence the name of Watton Radio Model Club rather than Watton Model Flying Club. Forming the flying club Three RAF personnel and one civilian flew model aircraft at RAF Watton, Two of the RAF personnel were posted and the third Ian Platt was ending his service in the RAF, leaving me the civilian (Norman Phillips who was allowed to fly due to his employment with the RAF at Watton.) on my own.. Not realising this I asked Ian weather he would be interested in starting a model club at RAF Watton, he thought that it would be a very good idea. Contact was made with the commanding officer who had no objection, the only stipulation was that the club members had to be members of SMAE (Now known as the BMFA) The two then placed notices in Watton regarding the proposed starting of a model flying club and were amazed at the response at the first assembly in the Crown pub where considerbly more people turned up than expected. The rest is history!!!!!
